A recruitment-for-recruitment reality check

Interviewer - 2001-03-19

Dear editor,

Thank you Sean Orsler for your suggestions for the recruitment-to-recruitment industry. Can I add some of my own, for him and the other Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) members concerned about indiscriminate headhunting?

1 Indiscriminate headhunting doesn't work. Actually it annoys the target who generally make a very vocal mockery of the "headhunter". This is not a threat to you, just a bit of cheap fun for your staff. I am sure they waste far more time on junk emails.

2 Vote with your purse. Make sure your suppliers prove how they get their candidates for you (many companies don't seem too concerned about indiscriminate head-hunting if they think they'll benefit). And avoid dubious recruitment to recruitment operators who will agree to impose low margins. They clearly can't be factoring in proper research fees, can they?

3 Are the REC actual verifying the headhunting processes of the R2R firms that have joined, to ensure they do not headhunt indiscriminately? And do the apply the same criteria to the rest of their membership?
