Perks at work
Live Wire - 2001-01-01

Peer under a colleague's desk at work and you may find a pair of eyes looking back at you. Dogs can be found in some of the grandest offices including the White House and Stormont Castle where Peter Mandleson's Labrador Bobby holds court. Bringing your dog to work is just one of the latest tactics employers are using to keep you happy in your job - and, it seems, tied to your desk. Now you can have breakfast in the office, the mundane chores like dry-cleaning and shopping will be done for you, there are on-site gyms and even concierge services ensure that someone is at home to let in the plumber.
Zena Everett, MD of recruiters Perriam & Everett makes no apologies for offering incentives for staff who work early and late. She says: "Like every employer I want to get as much out of people as possible within reason, and believe the best way is to make sure they're looked after. People work long hours here, so if they're in before 8.30am it's nice to give them breakfast - having people fainting from hunger by mid-morning is no use to anyone. And when people stay late we get in pizzas, beer and wine. Our staff earn up to £140K, so we feel that they can afford to pay for life insurance and so on, but it's the little things which make the difference."
